Wingspread Cormorant Bird Carving

A fine hand carved and painted sculpture of a cormorant with its wings spread and standing on a natural wooden block.
 
Cormorants are excellent swimmers, plunging head first they can dive down as far as 100 feet in the pursuit of food.

These elegant and dramatic members of the pelican family can be seen perched on posts or rocks near the cliffs where they nest and are frequently seen with their wings out stretched.  

It is often assumed that they are drying their wings in this posture, though it’s more likely that they do this to keep other birds in the colony at bay allowing for a quick unimpeded take off.

Their superb fishing skills were used to great effect in China where cormorants were trained to catch fish, as seen in classical Chinese paintings of the period.

Today the UK is an internationally important wintering site for this most remarkable of sea birds.

Intended for interior display, each bird has been skilfully hand carved by village craftsmen on the island of Bali in Indonesia. 

They are produced under fair trading conditions to benefit the village community as well as the producer and have been painted using lead free paints and local replaceable softwood.

Due to the handmade and painted nature of this product, there may be slight variations in colour and distressing from the images shown as each has its own individual character.
