There is something particularly magical about the light that appears after a storm, and in this fine art print by Nel Whatmore entitled ‘The Beauty after the Storm’ she captures that fleeting moment beautifully.

This atmospheric print is taken from Nel’s original pastel painting of Looe Bar on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, inspired by her time spent studying the sea in the beautiful low light of the Cornish coast.

The rich autumnal tones and glowing light across the water create a wonderfully evocative scene, bringing warmth, colour and a sense of calm to the painting.

Nel was recently selected for an artist residency on the Lizard Peninsula, where she spent a week exploring and painting some of the area’s most spectacular beaches and coastline, including Kynance Cove and Looe Bar on the Penrose Estate. The experience gave her the opportunity to spend long periods watching the sea as the light changed throughout the day.

For Nel, the sunsets were one of the highlights of the residency. As the sun fell towards the horizon, the sea and sky were transformed by warm, changing colours, creating exactly the kind of fleeting coastal moment that she loves to capture in her paintings.

Working predominantly in pastel and oils, Nel has a particular passion for colour and the way it can influence our mood and brighten our everyday lives. Her paintings often combine beautiful, carefully blended colours with a strong sense of atmosphere, inviting the viewer to pause and enjoy the moment.

A Yorkshire-based artist, Nel has been painting professionally for over 40 years and works predominantly in pastels and oils. She has travelled extensively around the UK in search of inspiration, painting coastlines from the far north of Scotland and the Outer Hebrides to Cornwall and the south coast of England.

This high-quality print is produced on fine art paper and features a white border of approximately 1.5–2cm, depending on the print size. The original artwork measured 70cm x 70cm, while the print is available in a range of sizes to suit different spaces and budgets.
