South African Polished Abalone

Description
Beautiful iridescent mother of pearl refracts the light between various shades of pink, purple and colourful hues of blue green within the surface of the South African abalone shell.
The once rugged and textured outer surface has been polished to reveals an amazing array of glistening colours.

The South African abalone occupies a one piece shell and belongs to the large Haliotis family which has in excess of 100 species. Most are edible rock dwelling shells found in both shallow and deeper waters.
They also makes a rather lovely soap dish; it even has its own natural drainage holes.
Size: approx 11 x 14 cm long
