The inspiration for this atmospheric painting came from Alnmouth on the Northumberland coast, one of Nel’s favourite places to paint. With its vast sandy beaches, wide open skies and wonderfully unspoilt coastline, Northumberland provides a constant source of inspiration for her work.

Here, she has captured the sun setting over the wide expanse of Alnmouth beach in a palette of soft, muted colours. The gentle tones of the sky and sea create a wonderful sense of tranquillity, while the expansive composition gives the painting an almost timeless quality.

The print is taken from one of Nel’s original pastel paintings. Pastel is a particularly effective medium for capturing the subtle changes of colour and light found at the coast, allowing Nel to create beautifully soft blends and atmospheric skies.

There is a lovely familiarity to this scene, that feeling after a perfect day beside the sea, when the crowds have gone, the beach begins to quieten and there is nothing left to do but sit and listen to the waves as the sun goes down.

A Yorkshire-based artist, Nel has been painting professionally for over 40 years and works predominantly in pastels and oils. She has travelled extensively around the UK in search of inspiration, painting coastlines from the far north of Scotland and the Outer Hebrides to Cornwall and the south coast of England.

This high-quality print is produced on fine art paper and features a white border of approximately 1.5–2cm, depending on the print size. The original artwork measured 70cm x 70cm, while the print is available in a range of sizes to suit different spaces and budgets.
