Sanderling Bird Carving

This fine hand carving of a group of Sanderlings sheltering from the cold winds makes a lovely display.

With heads tucked beneath feathers, the display has been beautifully realised in the plumage and patina of finish. The Sanderlings are mounted upon a wooden base.

The Sanderling is a small plump wader approximately 18cm in length. The winter bird is very pale almost white apart from a dark shoulder patch where the folded wing meets the body.

Although they do not breed in the UK they can be found forming large flocks on many of our long sandy beaches around the country. As a winter visitor and passage migrant in spring and autumn, they journey to and from their high Arctic breeding grounds.

Characteristically they run along the beach with a bicycling action, stopping frequently to pick up small food items, typically small crabs, marine worms and other small invertebrates.
