Royal Thorny Oyster
£12.95
Description
The beautiful Royal Thorny Oyster (Spondylus Regis) is closely related to the scallop and lives permanently attached to corals and rocks.
The shell comes as two halves making it an ideal hidey hole for jewellery and other small trinkets, with some of our customers also using them as Ring Bearers at Weddings.
Sometimes known as ‘Chrysanthemum Shells’ due to their flower-like appearance, the shell opens on a joint not dissimilar to the human elbow.
Colours are predominately pinky purples to dark reds.
The species is common among the shallow waters of the Indo Pacific Ocean.
As large specimen shells, they will naturally have acquired imperfections during their lifetime.
It’s quite common for an occasional spine to be broken or missing and this should be considered perfectly normal and very much part of the individual charm and character of a special shell of this type.
Overall Size: approx 12 x 14 cm (including spines) (5 x 5.5 inches)
Shell Size: approx 8 x 8 cm (3 x 3 inches)
