Polished Red Abalone Shell

Once the outer layers of the Red Abalone’s surface have been polished back, they display a wonderfully mottled surface of terracotta reds and mother of pearl.

The glistening penalized areas displays an amazing array of iridescent colours as the light refracts between pinks and colourful shades of blue green.

In excess of 100 species, abalones belong to the large Haliotis family. Most are edible rock dwelling shells found in both shallow and deeper waters.

This particular species Haliotis Rufescens is common to Indo Pacific waters.
