Polished Mussel Shell Half

These Mussel shells have a wonderfully tactile surface now the rough outer layers have been removed and polished to reveal the shiny mother of pearl beneath.

Viewing the shell from different angles reveals an amazing array of glistening colours in the creamy white surface. Holding the shell to the light exposes rich brown shades hinted at on the clams’ exterior face.

The shell can also be used as a shallow dish for storing or displaying precious jewellery items or perhaps within the bathroom with potpourri or in the kitchen with food.

The mussel belongs to the same family of marine bivalves as that of oysters and clam shells commonly found washed up on beaches. Freshwater species can sometimes be found along the flood plains of rivers.
