As with many species the Donkeys Ear shell has a thick inner layer composed of nacre or mother of pearl which is highly iridescent.
The last curl on the body of this elongated shell resembles an ear, giving rise to the common name of Donkey’s Ear, Ear Shell or "Asses Ear.
With the outer layers removed and polished the shell reveals an amazing range of glistening colours which make it so attractive.
A beautiful shell with exquisite and stunning colours that range from pearly pinks and shimmering purples to vibrant greens.
The Donkeys Ear belongs to the Haliotidae family of shells that include abalones, ormers and sea ears and number in excess of 100 species.
Most are edible rock dwelling shells and can be found in both shallow and deeper waters worldwide.
An abundant species from the Indo Pacific area
