Oystercatchers – Woodcut Print

Oystercatchers feed on the mud just as a cormorant takes off to hunt further afield in this original limited edition woodcut print by Valerie Sims.

The view was inspired by events at low tide at Thornham creek on the North Norfolk coast.

Valerie grew up in Leigh on Sea on the Thames estuary, but now lives in Ely on the Fens with the nearby Norfolk coast for inspiration.

The area is a reminder of her childhood primal landscape of water, birds, boats and wooden structures. Her interest in ecology and the interconnectedness of all things in the natural world also plays a large part in her work.

Valerie has a degree in Fine Art Printmaking from the Cambridge School of Art and shows her work regularly in East Anglia and occasionally further afield.

Woodcuts are created by cutting an image into a wood or plywood block. Working in reverse, the artist cuts away areas and these appear in the finished print as the white parts of the design while the ink adheres to the raised areas.

Oil based Ink is then rolled over the block and printmaking paper placed over, before applying gentle pressure either using a hand-operated press or by hand to create the print

Each one of these limited edition woodcut prints is an original work of art and is technically known as an impression.

Individually hand printed they are supplied unframed, packaged well and are signed and numbered by the artist.
