Swell​ waves are generally created by storm winds raging hundreds of miles out to sea and are quite different from waves​ which are created by local winds along coastal beaches.

Over time and distance, sustained wind strength and duration build up a large amount of energy beneath the ocean’s surface, forming these deeper higher waves.
