The exceptionally large Melo Melo shell is also know an as the Indian Volute or Bailer Shell.
The oval outline of the shell has a smooth surface coloured a pale orange, though sometimes they show irregular brown spots; the interior has a glossy cream appearance.
The melo melo is often collected for food by local fishermen with the shell also being used as a scoop to bail out their boats, hence the common name of bailer shell.
In the local markets the shell is also used as a scoop for loose produce as well as for decoration.
The large and well know family of volutidae shells is popular with collectors, possibly due to the wide variety of patterns and colours the shells display.
