Imperial Volute Shell

The Imperial Volute shell with its spiked crown of hollow spines is particularly impressive, as are the decorative and elaborate patterns covering its surface.

A large and well know family of some 200 known species, the Volutidae are popular with collectors, possibly due to the wide variety of patterns and colours that the shells display.

They occupy worldwide seas, but the warmer water species are the more colourful and attractive.

This species (cymbiola imperialis) is common in the Indo-Pacific region.
