Hand Forged Door Knocker
This hand forged door knocker has an amazingly detailed design that mimics twisted rope upon a plank of driftwood.
To the casual observer it’s easy to forget that it’s actually been completely handmade from steel.
Individually hand forged on an anvil in the traditional manner by blacksmith Lucille Scott.

In a process taking nearly thirty hours, a hot cut chisel is first used to cut down four sides of an 8mm rod to indicate the individual strands, before being twisted and knotted upon the anvil till it resembles a rope.
The backing plate then receives a similar treatment to achieve the realistic markings of wood grain.
Finally the individual pieces are coated with linseed oil and 'baked' by being held over the hot fire creating a water resistant finish.
Lucille is a designer blacksmith creating fantastic bespoke handmade metal items whilst also teaching Design & Technology at Portsmouth High School.
Having lived near the sea all her life, Lucille draws from the elegance and power of water, rocks and plants. Her work represents aspects derived from the sea and observing nature in general and abounds with flowing organic forms.
Lucille delights in the fact that she has a couple of the best jobs in the world. She gets to work with the next generation and enjoys their enthusiasm and unconstrained ideas whilst nurturing her own love of playing with fire, getting dirty and bashing metal!
The length of the threaded bars that go through the door is 6cm (these can be cut to length when being installed).
