Green Sea Urchin

Green sea urchins in comes in various shades of olive green and have a slightly raised texture to their surface.

The spines, which in some species are long and sharp, serve to protect the urchin from predators, once cleaned of these the shell or test has a wonderful geometric beauty.

The body is made up of some twenty curved plates fused together to form a rigid shell or exoskeleton.

Sea urchins are spiny sea creatures found in oceans all over the world. Urchins feed on algae and seaweed in the wild, but when left unchecked can devastate underwater environments.

In British Columbia sea otters have been re-introduced as natural predators to combat the problem and the eco-system has improved greatly.
