Green Sandpiper Preening

Description

The beautiful colours and patina of this elegant sandpiper wood carving have been skilfully realised.

One of the most elegant of the sandpiper family, the green sandpiper is a passage migrant from northern Europe that visits Britain in the spring and autumn whilst on its way to Africa.

Small numbers do over winter in the south and west and breeding pairs have been recorded.

The green sandpipers nest is unusual for a wader as it chooses the old nests of other birds or even squirrels in trees and adds very little new material.

Their favoured habitats are small pools and reservoir edges inland, and marshes on the coast.

It is a shy bird, and when disturbed will take off almost vertically on its strong wings with a loud clear call, towering to great heights with much turning and falling, showing the distinctive black and white tail bars which complete its beautiful dappled plumage.

Intended for interior display, each bird has been skilfully hand carved by village craftsmen on the island of Bali in Indonesia.

They are produced under fair trading conditions to benefit the village community as well as the producer and have been painted using lead free paints and local replaceable softwood.

Due to the handmade and painted nature of this product, there may be slight variations in colour and distressing from the images shown as each has its own individual character.

Simple, elegant decoration beautifully hand carved and painted.
