Golden Cowrie Shell

Description

The Golden Cowrie is possibly the most famous, almost legendary and sought after of all seashells.

Greatly prized amongst collectors as well as shell fanciers and lovers of beautiful natural objects.

Cypraea Aurantium inhabits deep rocky crevices and caves in depths between 15-45 metres (49-148 feet). It is frequently collected in the Samar Islands (Philippines) and more uncommonly in the Fijian and Solomon Islands.

It has long been a symbol of status and badge of rank among Fijian Chiefs and some specimens have holes bored into them, indicating their use for personal adornment.

Although relatively common in the Philippines, demand for this beautiful and striking shell has always exceeded supply.

The price for good specimens has remained fairly constant during the last twenty to thirty years, with gem quality shells (a virtually flawless specimen) reaching £200 plus.

Unlike some species of Cowries, the Golden Cowrie rarely differs in size or colour. Freshly fished, shells are almost magenta in colour, quickly fading to an overall deep orange.

All shells will have acquired minor marks and imperfections during their lifetime and just like us these are very much part of their individual character and charm.

As this makes each item quite unique, the photographs shown are of the actual item to be supplied.

Size: approx  6 cm W x 4.5 cm H x 9.5 cm L      (2.5 x  1.75 x 3.75 inches)
