Eyed Cowrie Shell
The common name of Hundred Eyed Cowrie refers to the curious markings which cover this shells surface.
For cowries, it’s only in the later stages of growth and maturity that the last layers of pattern are laid down and the shell becomes recognisable as a distinct species.
Cowries in all of their forms are perhaps the most collected of all species, with their beautiful colours, smooth porcelain like finish and unique pattern they always invite curious interest.
The eyed cowrie (cypraea argus) has a light pale cream base colour which is overlaid with the distinctive circular eyed pattern. The underside reveals the ridged opening and four dark brown patches.
The species is abundant and can be found in shallow water under loose rocks or boulders along the shoreline and in the nooks and crevices around coral reefs feeding at night.
This seashell is common within the waters of Indo Pacific seas.
