Echo Nautica IV – Textile Art

Description

Titled ‘Echo Nautica IV’ this textile artwork by Lucinda Button forms part of a series that reflects her practice of transforming repurposed fabrics and discarded materials, interwoven with beach detritus, both natural and human-made.

Each composition takes the viewer through a variety of seas on any given day at any time.  Being at sea, experiencing the variety of colours and textures at any given moment inspires my compositions and colours says Lucinda.

Often abstract in nature Lucinda’s work aims inspire, to spark dialogue and provoke thought through her work, which is enriched by the bold use of colour, the storied history of fabrics, or the raw beauty of their inherent textures.

I like to sometimes allow work to escape the frame (if there even is one!) this is for visual and psychological purposes. I want the viewer to wonder why, to want to look more closely and think.

I draw on a wide range of processes and techniques to create diverse textile expressions. Fabrics, old garments and even outdated swatch books are given a new life. Nothing is discarded; swatch books are transformed into paper and the remnants from the dying processes become the foundation for new work.

Repurposed fabrics are often dyed or mono-printed before being bound together through hours of hand embroidery. This slow, deliberate act of stitching has become essential to my own well-being, anchoring me in the present, easing life’s pressures, and offering a calming balance against daily stresses.

The harm inflicted on our marine environment is a driving force and powerful motivation behind much of my work. Through transformation, I seek to educate, revealing beauty within discarded objects and waste materials.

By incorporating fishing detritus, I aim to highlight our complex relationship with the oceans. As their custodians, we carry the responsibility to act and restore the health of our Blue Planet.
