Eastbourne Miniature – Coastal Artwork
This little coastal artwork features repurposed nautical charts featuring the waters around Eastbourne off the East Sussex coastline.
Using mostly recycled and repurposed materials Lucinda Button combines various hand embroidery techniques.
The harm inflicted on our marine environment is a driving force and powerful motivation behind much of Lucinda’s work. Through transformation, she seeks to educate, revealing beauty within discarded objects and waste materials.
Often abstract in nature Lucinda’s work aims inspire, to spark dialogue and provoke thought through her work, which is enriched by the bold use of colour, the storied history of fabrics, or the raw beauty of their inherent textures.
I like to sometimes allow work to escape the frame (if there even is one!) this is for visual and psychological purposes. I want the viewer to wonder why, to want to look more closely and think.
I draw on a wide range of processes and techniques to create diverse textile expressions. Fabrics, old garments and even outdated swatch books are given a new life. Nothing is discarded; swatch books are transformed into paper and the remnants from the dying processes become the foundation for new work.
Repurposed fabrics are often dyed or mono-printed before being bound together through hours of hand embroidery. This slow, deliberate act of stitching has become essential to my own well-being, anchoring me in the present, easing life’s pressures, and offering a calming balance against daily stresses.
