Blue Whale - Wall Hanging
This unique Blue Whale wall hanging has been carefully made by Rachel White using recycled ghost nets salvaged from our beaches.
Ghost nets are the abandoned and discarded fishing nets and ropes which drift un-tethered in our seas. They frequently entangle and endanger wildlife before being washed upon our shores.
They are gathered and salvaged on beachcombing walks, de-tangled, washed, dried, sorted and finally assembled into original designs.
The whale is fitted with a dark blue glass eye, whilst the design utilises salvaged ropes together with vintage pages from the classic maritime novel by Herman Melville.
Rachel is a driftwood and strandline artist living in Weymouth with her husband, a retired seaman, just a mile from the sea.
Made in her workshop studio, she sources her materials from local beaches and bays along the Jurassic Coast of West Dorset, England.
Rachel’s work is regularly exhibited at various galleries across the southwest and recently one of her creations was selected to dress the kitchen set of ‘Ainsley’s Good Mood Food' on ITV.
