Black Pen Shell – Polished

The rough outside of the Pen shell has been beautifully polished and displays rich earthy colours ranging from black to deep purples.

The shell also reveals wonderfully translucent colours when held up to the light.

The Pen shell belongs to a small family of fan like shells called Pinnidae, The species inhabit calm warm seas living vertically with their narrow ends buried in the sand.

This species is a common to the waters of the Indo Pacific and its Latin name is ‘atrina vexillum born’.

Size: approx 18-19 cm long   (7-7.5 inches)
