One is easily reminded of giraffes when looking at the curiously patterned Babylon Whelk Shell, this species Areola Babylon Shell is common to seas throughout Southeast Asia.
The Buccinidae group of shells has a large and diverse family of over 400 species.
Whelks are carnivorous and inhabit both cold and tropical seas, feeding on sea urchins, scallops and marine worms.
The deep sea species tend to have quite dull colouration whereas those of warmer tropical seas are colourful and patterned.
Sold individually.
