Australian Red Abalone Shell No3 - Large
The natural unpolished, rugged and wonderfully textured outer shell of this extra large Australian abalone with its red hues, gives way to a gorgeous pearlised underside.
The shimmering inner surface displays an amazing array of iridescent colours as the light refracts between pinks and colourful shades of blue and green.
The pictures show the actual item you would receive; this shell is amazing with its natural colours and would look fabulous on display in your home or bathroom as soap dish; it even has its own natural drainage holes.
Abalones are also used as traditional vessels in which herbs and smudges can be burnt. They are great for leaning burning sticks in, whilst with the addition of sand or earth can then be used to help extinguish them afterwards.
Also loose herbs or the broken ends of smudge sticks can be placed in the shell for burning, again with or without sand or earth.
Abalones, Ormers or Sea Ears belong to the haliotidae family of shells which number in excess of 100 species. Most are edible rock dwelling shells found in both shallow and deeper waters.
