African Murex Shell

The popular sculptured and ornate African Murex seashell features brown markings upon a white shell base. The opening often tinged pink flows back to a beautifully smooth white inner surface.

There are 700 known species in this beautiful family of shells and they are noted for their unique shape and curving spines.

Typically feeding on bivalves, shrimp, and sponge among other creatures of similar size, they can be found in sand or mud flats, and on coral reefs.

When the frond-like spines are coated with sea moss, the shell may be completely camouflaged amid rocks or on reefs.

This seashell is common to the shallow reefs along the West African Coast.
